Mascot fighter
You pick famous characters from different franchises, often a company's mascots, and pit them against each other in one fighting game: that crossover of franchises is what defines it. It almost always follows platform fighter rules, with several rivals at once, and instead of draining a health bar you try to knock them off the stage.
